Spring 2011 - Fall 2012
This photo captures one intense sequence last fall as SGS presented the Fall Concert at the Harris Center featuring Yuri Liberzon and Grisha Goryachev. The sold out show was a dazzling display of classical and flamenco virtuosity and artistic inspiration. They also appeared on Capitol Public Radio with Beth Ruyak and on ABC's Good Day Sacramento.
Below is a shot from the Spring Concert at Harris Center, with the amazing quartet, Festival of Four.
Groupmuse: A New Paradigm for Classical
In the tradition of house concerts down through the centuries, intimate performances with small audiences.

September 2017
I had the chance to open Sacramento to the Groupmuse platform with a solo concert in a home. The Groupmuse website advertises,
Groupmuse - Bringing chamber music back where it began: the living room. Professional classical musicians are playing intimate house shows all over the country. Bring your own drinks, sit on the floor next to a stranger, and dig into music that’s blown minds and throbbed hearts for centuries.
I truly enjoyed the intimacy the house concert format provides - people were in chairs and on the floor near me and in seats going to the far end of the house. My style includes less formality to start with, and everyone seemed delighted with the blend of my favorites with introductions and the "party with a theme" atmosphere. There's a long break between sets for attendees to enjoy refreshments and meeting one another. It was sold out, but then how may can you fit in the average house? With how our host Anara Guard judged the evening's success, she offered to repeat the event with my flute and guitar duet in January - coming up soon! So excited to work again with Francesca Anderson, Principal Flute of the Folsom Lake Symphony. She has a super power in sharing her love of music and the flute family, and there is hardly a better combination of instruments than the guitar and flute.

A Few Minutes with Christopher Parkening
What an honor, to take this photo so the Maestro could have one of receiving the La Guitarra California Lifetime Achievement Award from Festival Director Russ De Angelo.

Of course I shared it with everyone, and a few months later saw it on page 11 of Classical Guitar Magazine.
The morning after his La Guitarra concert, Parkening gave a masterclass. I shot a few pics of the students for their souvenirs and stepped in for one myself. Telling him how much I appreciated what he's meant to me and my students was a precious moment.
The after party on Saturday hosts international competition winners - here were (L-R) Celil Refik Kaya, Martha Masters, Marc Teicholz, Jason Vieaux, Johannes Möller, Rovshan Mamedkuliev and Jérémy Jouve.
Here Lili and I bring Grisha (on left) and Yuri (on right) to visit Nick Iliev at the offices of our sponsor, Kremona USA.
La Guitarra California 2017 was a great, uplifting festival allowing me to connect with old friends and new, especially my travel mate Jerry Snyder. I wound up writing an article on the whole trip and intend to get that online, so a LINK is pending.. :-)
What started as Quarterly Newsletters has become biannual - but my hope is to capture some key moments and memories, not forget them. For 2017 and just beginning 2018 so far, that includes presenting, teaching and performing, and experiences like helping luthier Brian Burns with content for his website. Here are videos where he talks with me about his guitars and I play them.

Throughout the year I continued to play a regular monthly gig at the wonderful Bacchus House Wine, Bar & Bistro in Folsom. Between that job, the Sacramento Guitar Society Holiday Concert and eleven other jobs in December, I was ready for a rest. We managed to get lights up and luminaries set out Christmas Eve and have very relaxing couple of days of rest.
     More highlights include:
 - performing for the Winters Guitar Festival
- sharing a concert with Gregory Newton at Krotona in Ojai
- accompanying Francesca Anderson's flute students in their Spring Recital
- visiting with my old teacher Robert Burns up in Fort Bragg and the luthier Brian Burns (no relation)
- a number of terrific concerts with Sacramento Guitar Society including Muriel Anderson's wonderful Wonderlust Audio Visual program
- hosting our own private house concert in August with Michael Chapdelaine
- handing off the role of President of SGS to a most worthy successor, Lili Williams
- teaching the seniors guitar class at the Folsom Senior Center a few minutes after I get out of yoga
- beating the odds with health and happiness while feeding and sheltering my family

As of this writing there are many things to look forward to in 2018 - guitar festivals (including teaching work), SGS events and milestones, hopefully (finally) getting more recording finished, seeing family and friends (which I value more than ever), reading books recently acquired/received: Carlos Santana;s autobiography "The Universal Tone - Bringing My Story to Light", my friend Herb Tanimoto's book "Keiko's Kimono", "The Art of Living" by Thich Nhat Hanh, "Building An Interpretation" by Carlos Santi, and "Don Andrés and Paquita - The Life of Segovia in Montevideo" by Alfredo Escande.
